Prescription Acne Medications

Azelaic Acid

Sol under the brand name "Azelex". Azelex is a cream containing 20% azelaic acid, a naturally occuring acid found in whole grain cereals and animal products. It is normally applied twice daily.

Adapalene
Made under the brand name "Differin", it is a gel which is applied once a day.

Clindamycin
Commonly used brand names are Benzaclin,Cleocin T, Clinda-derm, Clindets, 

Clindamycin usually comes in a solution, a gel, or a lotion, and is normally applied twice daily and is an antibacterial medication.

Erythromycin

Commonly used brand names are Akne-Mycin, A/T/S, Benzamycin, Emgel, Erycette, Eryderm, Erygel, Erymax, Ery-Sol, Erythra-Derm, ETS, Staticin, Theramycin Z, T-Stat. Erythromycin is an antibiotic packaged in gel, ointment, or easy to carry packets, and solutions for use on the skin and is usually applied twice a day in the morning and in the evening.

Isotretinoin
Made under the brand name "Accutane", isotretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A taken in pill form for 15-20 weeks. Doctors prescribe it for people with "severe nodular acne" that does not respond to other treatments. Nodules are inflammatory lesions with a diameter of 5mm or more. A single course of 15-20 weeks has been shown to result in complete clearing and long-term remission of acne in many people.

Oral Antibiotics
